Want to bring my old RGH up to date

Recommended Posts

It's been a couple of years since I last used my machine.

Just got it out again now, and it still works.

I co-opted the USB HDD that I used to run games from a while back. It still runs my old burned DVDs, and I assume it would work with the USB HDD if I got it formatted right and got the games installed onto it correctly again.

I've forgotten most of what I knew about getting games onto the USB HDD though. I remember using xbox image browser to extract them from iso files, and then using some other program to create little files that needed to be transferred to the 360's HDD with XeX so the games could be launched from the My Games menu on the dash.

Given that it's been a couple of years, I figure I probably need to update my kernel and dashboard to new versions if I want to run the latest games. Is that right?

I'm a bit sketchy on the details of my RGH mod. It was done for me by someone else, so I've never really been exposed to all the technical details of it.

I'll fill out the support template as best I can, and maybe someone can walk me through the process of figuring out any further information we need, and direct me to some instructions on how to update if needed, and refresh me on how best to get games running from my USB HDD.

Glitch/Nand Reader Product(s) used: Don't know. Coolrunner sounds familiar?
Console Type: Jasper.
NAND size: Don't know.
Dashboard version: System Information says 2.0.14699.0
CB version: Don't know.
Screenshot of NAND details from J-Runner/Xebuild GUIDon't know how to use those tools.
J-Runner/Xebuild Gui logDon't know how to use those tools.
updflash.bin log (if applicable)Don't know how to use those tools.
Image of Glitch Chip:I'm attaching photos I took in December 2011 just after the mod was done. I think it's shown in some of them.
Images of close-up soldering to motherboard: I'm attaching photos I took in December 2011 just after the mod was done.

Description of problem: I don't know how to update it to latest kernel and dash, and need reminding of how to best run games from USB HDD.

Was the console working before you started: Y

Do you get a green debug light appear on the RGH chip every 4-5 seconds: Don't know. Probably not relevant.

How long is the light on for each time: Don't know.

You have a Team Xecuter Coolrunner Rev A installed, that's for sure, you also have RGH 1.x (1.0 really)

You will want to update your kernel using one of the tutorials mentioned above, you may also want to install something like Aurora to manage your games, rather then using Quickboot (those old links might not work anymore btw)

Thanks for the replies!

I was looking at Swizzy's guide before I posted, but I didn't know enough of the details about my system to be able to follow it.

Knowing now that I have Team Xecuter Coolrunner Rev A and RGH 1.0, maybe I can get a bit farther with it.

It should be able to explain most of it for you already, if you can tell me where it was that you felt you didn't know enough to follow it, i can perhaps improve the guide, make it easier to follow :) it's meant to be for everyone, both those with alot of knowledge, and those with only a very small amount of knowledge

With a bit more reading I've managed to figure out most of it now.

The first stumbling point for me was remembering how to actually launch .xex files.

There's a certain level of knowledge that your guide is expecting, and while I used to have that knowledge, it's taken a bit of effort to figure things out again after a couple of years away from the scene.

Some instructions on how to launch .xex files, or a link to a basic guide on that might be useful for total noobs, or those like me who have been away for a long time.

I put Simple 360 NAND Flasher onto my freshly FAT32 formatted USB HDD, and launched its .xex file through XeXMenu.

It dumped my NAND, but informed me that I had a bad block. Is that going to be a problem?

Step 2, getting the CPU key was a bit of a struggle at first, since I didn't remember exactly what Xell was and how to launch it.

A bit of googling got me the info I needed. It's built-in as part of the RGH mod, and launched by hitting the Eject button to turn the console on.

Might be a good idea to mention that in the guide.

Once I got that sorted out, I was able to read the CPU key off the screen, and also harvest it through the network with xeBuild GUI.

Step 3, verifying the CPU key all went pretty smoothly.

It confirmed that I have a Jasper 16MB, so I selected that in the Motherboard section on the left.

I'm a little unsure of what to select in the Build type section on the left though.

You told me I have RGH 1.X, but I don't know if I should select ECC or Freeboot. Couldn't find any mention of that section in the guide.

Step 4, verifying the CB version was no problem. I got 6750 which matches up with Jasper RGH 1.X correctly.

Steps 5 and 6 look simple enough, but I'll wait until I hear back from you about the bad block and the build type before I try to do them.

I'll see about getting the mentioned changes in place

Regarding the badblock, it's nothing to worry about, you only have 1, anything less then 10 is considered "normal", basically what it means is that the block can't be used and has to be remapped, this is done automatically by xeBuild for you, so you don't have to worry about that

Regarding launching xex's it's not as straight forward as it may sound as not everyone have XEXMenu installed, nor does everyone have Dashlaunch installed, i can mention basics of how to use both of those and how to install XEXMenu but i'm likely not going to explain more then that as there are ALOT of different dashboards out there, and even more skins which may confuse people if they've been heavily modified (FSD had several skins with heavy modifications for example)

You're always going to be using Freeboot, i'll add that to the guide somewhere

I appreciate your feedback, it really helps with improving the guide, i wrote it quite a long time ago, mainly been updating the links at the top to the latest files as i released new versions as there have been unofficial xeBuild GUI versions popping up which use unofficial Dashlaunch versions, and alot of people have had trouble with using them and asked me to help them fix the problem, i can't fix problems with unofficial builds, i cannot be held responsible for any damage caused by them either, which some people don't understand
