XeBuild FreeBOOT NAND Update Tutorial

Recommended Posts

Subho Sarkar, you now need to save the raw flash from the XeLL web page. Then you need to download JRunner (google for it) and 16537 files for it, and then build new hacked nand using it. After you have built the nand, you need to flash it using XeLL (by putting the file in correct naming format to usb stick and booting to xell with the usb stick in xbox, if your xell is old you also need to update xell).

1) This new process appears to eliminate the need for XE_Build_GUI and the need to go get the $Systemupdate 16537 from MS.  Is that correct?

You still use the $systemupdate, but if you have a hdd this can now be installed without using the ms update process. It may still need to be done if a kinect is envolved, even if you have a hdd.

2) It also appears that in the future these updates are performed almost (?) automatically if the "updserv (sp?) option is enabled.  Is that correct?

No it won't touch anything unless you or someone else runs something that interacts with the update server (which runs on the xbox itself.)

3) While watching the install video I saw "Formatting the HDD Partition".  That concerns me a bit because I don't really know all the details of what is installed on the HDD.  Is it completed reformatting the HDD and applying all the updates, NAND updating etc?

There are various partitions on the hdd, there are 2 cache partitions, the system extended experience partition (the one that has avatars and stuff), the xbox1 compatibility partition (which if populated will have things like xefu.xex), and the main content partition (where things like games and profiles wind up, also the largest as it's not a fixed size like the others but limited only by the size of the disk instead.) What you saw in the video was only the partition needed for the extended data (avatar/kinect stuff) being formatted - it's absolutely required on machines that have never had such a partition, and is just a simple way of cleaning up the partition if it already exists. Incidentally, client mode in xebuild also has a way to format the xbox1 compatibility partition, and push files to it.As with anything, it's definitely not impossible something could (and as this and the 3.09 threads shows, will occasionally) go wrong... having a recovery method and data to recover to is a very good idea always, rather than relying on anything that is automatic (this is actually why the update mode has -d <folder> option too, to give a fast and simple way to keep a copy of what has come off the machine before changing anything on it.) Seriously, a 16M console literally takes 3-4s to read the entire flash with update sever, send it over LAN and write it to a PC HDD... it's never been faster or easier to have a safety net ;)

Ok, I really didnt want to have to post this here, but i cannot get xbox to connect to pc.  both are on same network/subnet, all i get is ''watching network for xbox...." and then it says it cannot find it. I've updated to dashlaunch 3.09 and tried the updserv on both 3.09 and 3.08 dashlaunch installers.  I am at a loss, not sure where its messing up, as FSD is telling me there are updates for it (so its talking to the internet).  How do i get XE_build to see xbox? (sorry for my n00b questions).  I have nand backups and stuff, but have never had to use Jrunner or update xbox myself.  Any help is much appreciated!!

I booted xell, and tried to put the xbox ip in IE (on pc) and got nothing there either.  Ive disabled all my protections on pc, just in case firewall was blocking XE_build, but no difference there.

xbox ip: 192.168.1.11

pc ip: 192.168.1.9

subnet: 255.255.255.0 (both)

gateway: 192.168.1.1

Jasper/Jtag on dash 15574 with dashlaunch 3.09 installed

I've just been reading this and just wanted to say absolutely fantastic work and hats off to you all at the team.

I've just updated the old way a few weeks ago, but wowser can't wait for another update out so I can try this.

I'll get something donated for the cause, it's the least I can do as a way of thanks for all the hard work you guys do and have done for the scene.

Everything works fine, when you enable "updserv" do not quick "dashlaunch installer" just type command "xebuild update" on cmd and click enter. I have connet Xbox directly to PC on cross lan cable and set manualy IP-s on PC and Xbox, really it's very easy.

Ok, I was looking into doing it manualy (via Xebuild GUI by swizzy), but I have no clue which ''hack'' was used (for my smc) all I know is its a jasper jtag.  Any help will be much appreciated.  Been at this all day changing ip's and subnets, changing pc's, etc.  Im lost.  If it can connect to the internet, why is it not connecting when I try to update?  (I have tried to set ip manually on box, and have tried it on 'automatic').  Also, how do i know if i have a big block or small block nand? (was looking into jrunner also)....

Can i directly connect a laptop to xbox via lan cable, and get it to work that way?

TIA!!

never mind, i got it...

Read my previous posts. I believe you have the same issue as I (and several others) had. Even though it is not stated in the first post, it is stated in the dashlaunch readme that if your dashboard version is too old (older than 14717 for glitch2), the new dashlaunch does not work. If that is the case, you need to update your nand.

Worked like a charm.

And i was very hesitant, i spent very little time with these things before due to work/family. I had an "off-the-shelf-RGH" and no apparent knowledge so far..

Updating Dashlaunch was easy, I had an 16197 kernel and 3.04 DL on the machine, together with the newest FSD3.

i have a Corona Slim 4 GB with additional 320 HDD internally, 2 TB USB on backside USB and 16 GB USB stick in the front. I unplugged the internal HDD and the external HDD because all coming stuff had to go on my internal 4 GB MU and i prefer things to not fuck up ...

All i had to do was put the DL 3.09. on a USB-stick and start the .XEX via FSD3. It kept my previous launch.ini and after the update started directly to FSD3. I started Dashlaunch again and started die update-manager, leaving DL running.

Xebuild worked like a charm, my corona is wifi-connected by fritzbox router. It found my box directly and it took 19 seconds for the whole process.

After restarting i saw that DL had survived, but in FSD my avatar was naked. I was a bit confused but found a solution here in the forums. I downloaded the update from XBOX.COM/update and put it on the usb-stick after renaming $systemupdate to $$ystemUpdate. it didnt work first time because i forgot to change the u to U in the foldername...

I swapped to METRO dash, inserted the usb-stick and started the required update.

Everything works like a charm. GREAT TUTORIAL and GREAT SOFTWARE!!!

BTW: GTAV ran perfectly with my 16197 kernel ...

ana: you must be giving xebuild wrong files somewhere. Most likely an incorrect $systemupdate in the 16537 folder

Jason Ang: it's a custom server, not SSH (which happens to be a shell/command line server) or anything like that.

When I type in my ip address in my browser in order to backup the nand, it takes me to the fsd3 login page. How can I get it into xell?

Buh? Boot your console into Xell instead of FSD! (isn't this kinda obvious?) - ie: turn on your Xbox using the eject button until Xell loads or use xelllaunch to run it -- there's a bunch of threads on this very site detailing this process if you feel lost; use search, it helps!Sent from my Windows Phone using Tapatalk
