  1. Well, I went and traded a Falcon JTAG, Silver tip phat PSU and when I order the crystal console from Canada, I'll be giving him all the parts off of it that I don't use in restoring this devkit. One strange issue though. The console boots, no RoL errors, but I cannot get it to give me a display with my AV cable, but his displayed the splash screen. Any specific type of AV cable I should be using with this thing and any ideas as to whether or not  HD conversion is possible with it?

    My other question is whether or not if I solder out the old original EEPROM chip itself with one from another xbox that I have a working drive for will it recognize and work? I've done this with repairing  standard hard drives by doing a controller board replacement so I'm really curious as if it's possible or not.  Now hard drives have EEPROM built into their controller board so I'm assuming here that the EEPROM on the console is a second one for drive verification purposes. So the thought here for me would be that even if my donor hard disk failed, then as long as I swapped the EEPROM from the failed drive to the donor drives controller board that it should recognize as long as it is the same make/model drive as the original one.

  2. Well, it's not really used the same way on Classic Xbox, IDE drives have a "lock", this is what microsoft used in the Classic Xbox, if the lcok isn't present it'll throw you an error (error 16 if memory serves me right) this only happens when you try to boot up the original dash tho as XBMC/EvoX etc. don't really care about it :)

    Superdisc have an app that lets you Lock/Unlock HDD's using the key stored in the eeprom

    Yeah I noticed when I loaded the disc last night. I thought it'd be more complicated than that. Pretty cut n dry actually. Thanks again for the utility disc man. Awesome stuff!!

  3. I don't think we'll ever add Cloud uploads to unity, however... there is then possibility of using other services perhaps such as Dropbox, Google Drive, One Drive etc. Unity is already now under high pressure from everything we're doing on it, you want to add even more to that? this would kill LiNK quickly ;) unlike microsoft we only have 1 server... (microsoft have a whole data center dedicated for Xbox LIVE)

    What about a plugin to utilize Mega for this? Like have the content encrypted and when users connect they would exchange a public key that would be asymmetric linked to their unity account?

  4. That true does suck then, cause the DVD bezel has green writing while the stock crystal case writing is silver. Also the top cover is taller and has green writing...

    img_4579.jpg

    Shit.....  I can tape the logo and try to color match it, the stencil I'd probably need to look around for or make it from scratch..   =\

  5. Any IDE HDD should work, i've not heard of any brand limitations...

    You don't need to read out the EEPROM using hardware, it'd be sufficent to just run the tools from Superdisc, essentially it holds everything you'll ever really need to do anything with a classic xbox, there are menu options called "Lock HDD" and "Unlock HDD" which lets you lock/unlock the HDD without having the key (it'll be read from the EEPROM and used, just like the bios does) there are also tools which let you switch the regions and such (allowing for different video output settings etc.)

    Thanks! I was wondering how I would read and/or write to it, but from what I'm gathering is that you use the app on the superdisc iso to read the EEPROM and write it to the donor drive correct? Kinda like doing the security sector hack?

    The part that sux is you may have to go to fleabay in Canada or UK to get the crystal cover for the dvd drive bay. Probably have to buy a whole console too.

    The one on my crystal Xbox says XCM, and I've looked for an OG replacement.

    That's going to be the really hard part.... especiall finding the bezzel for the drive. the internals were black right? or were those thing also crystal?

  6. @sladezzdragonzz had a modchip in one of his other xboxes, might be able to use that instead of doing the dump with an eeprom reader.

    I have that console here right now. I really should've asked to bring back the devkit to start working on it. Didn't really think I'd get so much good advise back so soon.

    if you ground D0 the onboard BIOS is ignored and whatever can be found on LPC is loaded in it's place...

    there's a disc we used to use where i worked before called "Super Disc" which can be used to format a new HDD and also lock it (which is what you would need from the eeprom, the key to lock it... but, this disc can read that without any hardware)

    Yes, the DVD is plug 'n' play as long as the connectors match (the power cable also holds a few commands, there was a PC drive that could be used if you added the connector and did a few mods...

    Your first priority imho is to get a DVD drive and a 3.5" IDE HDD so you can get started, if needed a mod chip can be used to override the onboard BIOS

    I'm sure if he doesnt have a usable dvd drive I do in this stack of crap in the garage.

    As far as the HDD goes,  we'll have to look around for one to use any brand limitations or can I just pop in any EIDE drive that will work?

    You haven't heard of "Super Disc" because it's based on Slayers and is probably only heard of in sweden as the one we had was branded by our store :p it might have been something someone in the shop cooked up for our customers specifically, however, it is available on the web... hell... a guaranteed good source is: http://xeupd.com/.downloads/Superdisc.iso don't worry, nothing on it is actually in swedish from what i remember... well, apart from the bakground...

    If memory serves me right, you need to have the DVD and HDD connected yes, the HDD also needs to be partitioned correctly aswell as contain "dash.xbe" in the correct place... on a retail system you also need the HDD to be locked, i've never actually worked with a devkit of the old xbox's so i can't really tell you much about those =/

    Thanks for the Superdisc link.

    What will I need to read the EEPROM for the new drive lock info? And is that more or less the same way I'd use a JR programmer, or can I use any old JTAG reader/writer like my Blackcat or a TTL rs232 cable? Also what dumping/writing software will I need? Or is this also on the superdisk iso?

    ######

    EDIT

    ######

    This is what I'd want once I have a partitioned drive in the devkit to fully restore its tools on the drive correct?

    xbox-developers-kit-5933-xbox-xb-364.jpg Release Info:

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    WAM is proud to present XBOX XDK 5933.
    Notes:
    ~~~~~~

    So Whats this? a new xdk? but microsoft said 5849 was the last one..

    Well they straight out lied. This xdk was produced for Microsoft's

    in house developers (Think Halo 2). What they tweaked is unknown

    but rest assured it must be good.

    -We've included the remote recovery exe for those

    who have an official debug kit.

    WARNING!WARNING!WARNING!WARNING!WARNING!WARNING!WARNING!WARNING!WARNING

    If you have a retail modded xbox do not use the remote

    recovery executable. it can and will flash your bios, overwrite your

    harddrive, and blank your eeprom. Unless of course you know what your doing.

    do not blame us if you hose your xbox!

    WARNING!WARNING!WARNING!WARNING!WARNING!WARNING!WARNING!WARNING!WARNING

  7. Assuming it is like the retail xbox, then I would assume that you will need to dump the eeprom with a hardware reader/writer, then recreate the HDD. I have no idea where you can get the latest hdd image from a devkit xbox, but it should be out there somewhere. You could also mod it, like you would a retail, but since it is a devkit, it will come with the extra ram already installed, which comes in handy for mame, and surreal64. As for the disc drive, any drive from an og xbox should be pulg and play, as that was before the dvd key concept existed.

    Greatly appreciated!

    I'll ask around at TX and check around on isozone. Hopefully we get lucky!!

  8. My buddy here sladezdragonz scored this quite recently and while over at his house we were checking it out. No hard drive or cd rom though....

    Anyone know any information on this on how we might be able to get it going again?

    Console was found in a garbage dumpster, No top case, no HDD, no DVD drive.

    I originally only had black screen on boot until I did the "Coma Console" fix which now on boot loads flubber splash screen then hangs before M$ logo is displayed.

    EEPROM was dumped using serial cable method from an old Win 98 box in PonyProg and is displayed as shown below. No serial number listed

    post-56760-0-92764000-1452577989_thumb.png

    Since I acquired it, it now has a Thomson DVD drive (Will swap out with a Samsung when I repair one from the pile of parts in the garage) and a Maxtor DiamondMAX 16 160GB ATA 133 EIDE drive with rounded ATA 133 cables.

    Manufacture date is: December 2001 N/A

    EEPROM is: XM2-3944

    TSOP is: Hyundai

    Encoder chip is: Connexant CX25871-14

    I also have a X2 Pro modchip to work with, but no cables, software, or previous knowledge on how to use said modchip....

  9. I just got a PS1 SCPH-7501 with the parallel port on it, 2 controllers, ac adapter and five games for $35 today. I gave the kid $95 and he kicked me down a N64 with controller and its power supply with internal memory upgrade and TWO Sega Genesis (Model 1 & Model 2) with one controller.

    I'm going to add these to the bucket list of future projects to do.

    I'm really interested in the Genesis though, I found out you can overclock it, add region switch, and language switch (Japanese/English) and then stumbled on a project another guy did that he calls the Sega Fusion, which puts a genesis, 32x, and SegaCD all under the hood of a Saturn chassis.

    Check this out!

  10. Maybe, maybe not. Cuda Vs OpenCl for hash cracking, CUDA usually performs better. Now removing SLI from the scenario, the titan z will outpreform the R9, that being said, the R9 is great for the price range. :) Then again who has 1500$ to spend on a video card, let alone enough for 2(SLI).

    RIGHT?????   hahahah!!!

    Titan Z will outperform the R9 single card for sure. I won't deny that at all. It's a beast, but damn.... 1500? REALLY???   Thats almost the price of how much I put into building my entire server. I really think for regular gamer's that the R9 will suit full graphics with no issues. Those comparisons I posted were in  2560x1440 resolutions.

    I can't wait until Doom 4 is on the shelves as I think it will be setting a lot of standards in PC gaming and the consoles also. I had a alpha burst test code for PS4 and gave it to my ex-fiancee and she now hates CoD as she's been addicted to it like crack for the last 5 years. One multiplayer ALPHA level made by iD did that much damage guys.....   Makes me wonder how sexy it's going to look with either video card on PC. I can't wait until they give me the Beta code, I'll probably go hang out with that sociopathic monster just to play it. lol

  11. They didnt compare against the titan z, which, if I remember correctly, has 12gb of vram, but who knows. lol.

    The 970Ti does outperform it but to be honest, when you get to the kinds of performance levels it really doesn't matter anymore unless better rendering technology comes out. I havent looked up any benchmarks in awhile aside from that one but it does make me wonder what the new cards will be capable of doing. Also in regards to the Titan Z, when you compare price, for the money I still think the R9 would probably be better than anything else in its price range. I mean c'mon bro... you're comparing a $1500 card to one that sells for $400 at the most. Lets be a bit more realistic in our comparisons...  That's like me telling you that your Antec case is shit compared to the Thermaltake Level 10 Titanium edition. I like Nvidia, I just admire AMD more. They've always been one of the best companies around. Even before they merged with ATI.

    I'll guarantee you that R9 will crack a hashkey faster than any Nvidia product under 1000 bucks. Now run dual or quad crossfire (I don't like triple SLI or Crossfire) and it will outperform your beloved Titan Z in ways that would make your mind spin.

    Now the 390X does outperform the Nvidia GTX 980 and it sells for around $490 wheras the 980 does sell for around $570

  12. So why have SLI Nvidia graphics or am I missing something here? Love amd and just about to Bulldozer my Corsair v Formula z and possibly crossfire R7 360's to upgrade my old R7 240's and Phenom II x4

    I was thinking of replacing my 660 ti's with dual R9 290x also made by Asus. Those R9's outperformed the Nvidia Titan cards by a long shot on a [H]ardOCP test and review.

  13. Damn Static! That's a sweet setup... I'm really looking forward to the AMD4 processors, I'm with you, AMD makes a sweet product at a great price point.

    I always like how you can overclock the hell out of them. only downside is their heat.

    I'm running a Asus Sabertooth 990FX board with and 8350 and 32GB of Corsair Vengeance with 1 120GB PNY SSD and 3 4TB Hitachi HGST over 2 Asus Geforce GTX  660 TI-DC20-2DG5 cards in SLI mode. Cosair  H100i water cooling.  The case (Mid size ATX) is pretty cool not sure what brand but it has a top dock for hot swapping SATA and eSATA drives with two lower hotswappable front 3 1/2" bays with 4 internal and 2 internal 2 1/2" bays. Only bad thing is I burned out my 750 watt PSU which I plan on replacing with a Corsair AX1200i.

  14. I'm going to just post these two articles here. Check them out and maybe how you may or may not feel about AMD might just change. While my server does utilize two Asus GTX 660TI Direct CU2 OC SLI cards, it is an 8 core overclocked AMD 8350 with 32GB of RAM and does transfer data at 124-168 MBps to my 13TB RAID array. No it does not run Windows (Probably why it works so well....)  Don't get me wrong Nvidia has always been a good company, but honestly speaking I've always liked AMD for its server functionality and as a gaming system for its overclocking capabilities.

    Check these two links though, great stuff really.

  15. Could you possibly post your log file that was generated? That would probably say exactly what the problem is. I'm guessing here but Swizzy would know, but the log file should be debug.log, located in your Aurora/Data/Logs  folder. I'd grab it via FTP and just copy/paste it here in a post with the code button so it's easier to read.

    If it's a problem that can be addressed posting the log would help greatly for others in the community who have the same problem but want to keep their png as their background.

  16. Isn't ubuntu also bundling another one... aptitude or something like that?

    Aptitude is in the repo, but the one I think you're referring to is their software center, there is another one which was released called AppGrid which is a faster loading and from what I've read better package manager than the standard software center.

    you forgot Gentoo using emerge(Portage), and Arch uses pacman. And between all of the versions of linux mentioned so far, the only 2 I would run are gentoo, or arch. I hate debian, and redhat based distros...... the package management could be better maintained, Also would suggest looking into slack ware. Note all 3 of the linux version I mentioned are not for Noobs. But if you want complete customization of all your apps, I would suggest Gentoo. Arch is good for the quick install, but I would rather customize, and compile everything. lol.

    I agree with you on Gentoo and Arch. I can't say I like Slackware because of how much of a pain in the ass it can be to config. Gentoo is hard also but at least you can build it custom to your hardware.  The last time I installed Gentoo I think was back in 2004 with a KDE manager to run a Battlefield 1942 server. I have no experience with Arch but I know many people who do use and enjoy it.

  17. Ok good advice. I definitely need to learn linux. So far I'm planning on staying due to user speed compared to windows7. Still haven't even learned how to install most programs. Grrrr! Other than that so far I'm loving linux mint.

    I recommend learning BASH and downloading and installing guake terminal. Its a great way for CLI stuff.

    Since you use mint, here is the link for their official forums for their kernal builds. The only problem is that their main forum is currently down due to what looks like an SQL issue.

    http://forum.linuxmint.com/

    I would recommend http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-newbie-8/

    Here's some more places for good info

    http://www.linux.org/forums/beginner-tutorials.53/

    And I would STRONGLY recommend the book or ebook "A Practical Guide to Linux Commands, editors, and Shell Programming" by Mark G. Sobell

    Google and *other* areas can be your friend in this regard.... ISBN-13: 978-0-13-136736-4 ISBN-10: 0-13-136736-6

    Yes, they still have the commandline version available, but i think ubuntu use something else now a days then "apt-get" something similar...

    Ya Ubuntu is apt-get. I think Mint uses apt also since its all debian based. And CentOS // Redhat // Fedora systems use YUM

  18. Can anyone share a folder with the tools i need. mainly im looking for something like xbox360mpgui for extracting the iso. new to linux. i have mint

    Use WINE,  https://www.winehq.org/download/ I'd think you shouldnt have too much of an issue with the USB stuff....

    The only one I'd think you might have a problem with would be FATxplorer but you'd just have to create a custom mount profile for the drive in question I think.  I'll try it out on my Laptop that runs the current distro of Ubuntu 15.10 and let you know.

    EDIT If all else fails and you cannot get it to run with WINE, install Virtualbox and run it from Win 7 emulated. Its not a game so you shouldnt have any issues at all I'd think...

  19. Eh.. Lol.. Contract goes to the lowest bidder.. Lmfao

    That or pay out the ass for your next "Latest and greatest" console......

    Also, I think AMD actually does a much better job with applications such as these anyways.

  20. I personally think that Aurora was done extremely well and all of its developers left in a LOT of room for growth!

    Don't get me wrong FSD is nice, and I really did like the dash interface, but with the memory issues that Swizzy mentioned awhile ago I really don't think the aesthetics of the previous dashboard or even the previous features should be seen as a deal breaker. Eventually they will most likely integrate all of the stuff that many users have complained about not being currently present in Aurora. Give them time, they'll  make the whole community proud as they've worked very hard to bring this breakthrough to everyone for nothing but the cost of time, effort, and dedication that they have all invested into this community project.

    For help, asking the community is cool and all but I do strongly encourage everyone new to Aurora to read the TuTs. They arent there to just take up server space you know and there are a lot of really good nuggets of information that many people should know about.

    Which reminds me, now that I have a friggin job I think I owe RMS some dues. I'll have something donated out of appreciation hopefully this weekend.
